Bruce Ballenger’s work spans both the research on writing and its practice, creating a unique perspective on how writing gets done. His scholarship focuses on the history of the personal essay, revision, and writing with research. His essays have appeared in The Sun, Fourth Genre, and River Teeth, along with edited collections. His essay “Return to the Typewriter” was a notable selection in Best American Essay (2018). He’s the author of seven books, including Crafting Truth: Short Studies in Creative Nonfiction.

Ideas for Writing Teachers

Until his retirement in 2018, Bruce Ballenger taught writing for 35 years. He helped to found the MFA program at Boise State University and taught creative nonfiction in the program for two decades. Much of what he shares here about the craft of writing arises from his experience in the classroom, and he hopes that writing teachers will find helpful pedagogical ideas that they can use in their writing classes.
